Our residents say it best! Below are common applicant questions answered by our residents.

Q:
What's it like to live in Albany?

A: Albany’s the perfect place to come if you like to fish, or do anything outside, like playing basketball or baseball. The residents often get together for picnics, flag football, pretty much anything you’d want to do.

There are a lot of things for children to do. We have all kinds of playgrounds, a zoo, the RiverQuarium, and wonderful year round weather.

There’s a very good trail along the river for mountain bike riding if you are looking for a challenge.

The beach is only three hours away, as Destin and Panama City are close by. You get the best of all worlds, as Albany is nice small quiet community that is easy to get around and very comfortable to live in, yet if you want the more upbeat lifestyle and you want to get away for the weekend, it’s really not that far away.

Q: Is it a safe place to raise a family?

A: When I was first looking for a program, a place to go, my wife and I narrowed down the possibilities, beginning with location. Mainly for my wife and kids to feel comfortable. We needed a place where they would be able to feel safe and feel secure, so my wife wouldn’t worry while I was at the hospital.

Q: What about the cost of living?

A: One the things we had to consider when we came to Albany, I had elected to take a year off after finishing medical school and my husband started right away as a new intern, and we had decided to stagger our internship year for the benefit of our children. We were going to be living on one resident’s salary and we are in our 30s, and we said we are not going to live in an apartment. We want to live in a nice home and have a nice big backyard for our children, and we were able to afford that here in Albany with just one salary. The first home we moved into was just wonderful. Our second child was born here at Phoebe Putney Hospital. We couldn’t have been happier. We had the home life we really wanted and we were able to afford in on just one resident’s salary.

Q: Is there anything to do in Albany?

A: I know a lot of residents go up to Atlanta frequently; again that’s only about three hours away. It’s been very convenient for them when they want the big city feeling when they want a little variety.

There are many, many different parties and activities that the resident put on just to be together.

There is a real bond between the residents, a lot of comradery, and it’s made it an enjoyable experience. We have a couple of women in the program who love putting together parties, so outside of the office we spend a lot of time together and they go to great effort to make sure that everybody is included.

We plan the Halloween party the Christmas party, we came up with the idea to do spring formal and different things. We do poker night and flag football, just various activities like that so we can all get together outside of work.
